UN Literacy Decade logo In 2001, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 2003 to 2012 as the Literacy Decade: Education for All. The Assembly believes that creating literate environments is essential to eradicating poverty, achieving gender equity and ensuring sustainable development.

The theme for International Literacy Day 2010 is 'The Power of Literacy', focusing on the empowering role of literacy and its importance for participation, citizenship and social development. For further information, visit the UN's International Literacy Day web pages.
